Pingtung: a resilient, sustainable, and livable city for future generations
To create a sustainable city, Pingtung County constructed wetlands to improve water quality and created riverside parks for the public. In rural areas, “Safe and Livable Community Certification” promotes resident participation. To promote international connections, Pingtung signed MOUs with Rotorua and Delaware County to enhance intercity cooperation. For disaster resilience, Pingtung established shelters and microgrids to ensure emergency power, introduced aquaculture insurance, and built groundwater recharge lakes to stabilize the water supply. Transportation development includes expressways, HSR, and buses to connect cities and townships. Furthermore, Pingtung promotes management of agricultural waste and marine debris, green buildings, and energy efficiency upgrades. Housing policies include 1,127 social housing units, rental subsidies, and post-disaster permanent housing. Cultural preservation focuses on Hakka culture, language nests, and indigenous education. The VLR is published biannually, targeting 2050 net-zero. With carbon reduction measures, solar energy, and reforestation, Pingtung continues to build a resilient, sustainable, and livable city for future generations.
