Digital Innovation for Sustainable Urban Parking in Tainan
Due to Tainan's narrow roads, adding parking spaces is limited. In response, the Transportation Bureau pioneered the use of private funds and smart technology. In 2019, it launched the “Smart Roadside Parking Meter System,” which uses millimeter radar, IoT, and AI license plate recognition to enable on-site electronic payment. Geomagnetic detectors were also installed, achieving 100% intelligent monitoring of roadside parking. Additionally, the first “smart parking cloud data platform” was created to integrate parking data. The “Tainan Easy-parking APP” offers real-time information, guidance, and parking space prediction. This has reduced the average time to find parking by 3-4 minutes. Over three years, it cut carbon emissions by 993 tons, helping ease traffic, reduce air pollution, and improve parking turnover and usage rates. These intelligent services have been widely praised by the public.
