The 3rd TWBA Taiwan Biodiversity Forum and Awards Ceremony attracted 413 on-site participants and a total of 1,032 including online attendees, all concerned with biodiversity issues.

In the current moment of intensifying global climate and nature crises, biodiversity issues have become the new core of sustainable governance. The "2025 Taiwan Biodiversity Forum and Awards Ceremony," co-hosted by the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, and the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), was grandly held today (July 16) at the International Conference Center of National Taiwan University Hospital. With the theme "Information Disclosure and Implementation Challenges," the forum gathered government agencies, businesses, academia, and international organizations, from policy strategies to corporate practices, focusing on terrestrial and marine conservation, natural carbon sinks, and international disclosure standards, promoting Taiwan towards nature-positive growth.

The on-site guests were outstanding, including TAISE Chairman Ambassador Eugene Chien, Director-General Lin Hwa-Ching of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Deputy Minister Shih Wen-Jen of the Ministry of Environment, Director-General Lu Hsiao-Yun of the Ocean Conservation Administration, former Council of Agriculture Chairman Lin Tsung-Hsien, Distinguished Professor Lin Hui-Chen of the Center for Ecology and Environmental Studies at Tunghai University, and Dean and Distinguished Professor Lin Yu-Pin of the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture at National Taiwan University. According to the day's statistics, there were 413 on-site and 619 online participants, totaling 1,032 attendees, showing that interest and investment in biodiversity issues from government, businesses, and the public are steadily rising.

 

Businesses as Catalysts, Taiwan's Biodiversity Soft Power Rises

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Eugene Chien pointed out that sustainability has become an important symbol of Taiwan's international competitiveness, emphasizing that business participation will be key to promoting dual-track transformation in climate and nature. He cited Taiwan's outstanding performance in the S&P and Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) as examples, calling on more agencies and groups to actively engage in conservation actions to create a virtuous cycle for biodiversity. Tim Loto, Global Chair of the Jane Goodall Institute, also called across the seas for the public to take action against the survival crisis of a million species, emphasizing that youth initiatives like Roots & Shoots have shown deep impact in Taiwan.

Director-General Lin Hwa-Ching of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency noted that the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework clearly requires businesses to assess risks and impacts on natural resources they depend on and disclose them. He called on all sectors to re-examine production and consumption models, mainstreaming biodiversity conservation across industries. Judge Lin Tsung-Hsien emphasized that biodiversity is inseparable from food security, and Taiwan's "guardian sacred mountains"—the Central Mountain Range—is the lifeline for disaster prevention; conservation should not be limited to natural systems but concerns national survival.

 

Exemplary Practices, Conservation Actions Blossom Everywhere

This forum also presented the "2025 Taiwan Biodiversity Awards," recognizing 16 benchmark cases from public and private sectors and non-profits. Winning organizations include Chunghwa Telecom, First Bank, E.Sun Financial Holding, Chiayi Forestry Division, and Yunlin County Government, showcasing diverse energy from businesses and localities.

In the corporate exemplar sharing session, First Bank shared how it incorporates biodiversity into credit and investment policies, developing multiple green finance tools, and linking "window-kill improvements" and other actions to urban conservation networks; Chunghwa Telecom demonstrated innovative applications of AI technology in habitat monitoring and species protection; the Chiayi Forestry Division used examples like Zhuro tree frog and mountain sparrow conservation to implement green network construction in low mountains and wetlands, strengthening habitat governance for human-nature coexistence.

 

Cross-Domain Linkages, Creating New Paradigms for Carbon Sinks and Disclosure

This forum also focused on integrated strategies for natural carbon sinks. Professor Liu Wan-Yu from National Chung Hsing University explained how forest carbon sinks combine FSC certification, carbon pricing, and sink enhancement actions to create quantifiable natural capital; Professor Chou Wen-Chen from National Taiwan Ocean University emphasized blue carbon ecosystems and marine CDR potential, advocating inclusion in the 2050 net-zero policy pathway; Academia Sinica Academician Yang Chih-Chung pointed out that soil carbon sinks (brown carbon), supported by TTT enzyme technology, can greatly enhance Taiwan's agricultural sustainability and carbon neutrality possibilities.

Facing new challenges in corporate responsibility disclosure, the forum analyzed international frameworks like CDP and S&P CSA. Director Chen Yao-Te and Dr. Tsai Ming-Che both noted that "Biocredits" and other nature-positive tools are taking shape, and Taiwanese businesses should actively develop nature transition plans. FSC Manager Huang Kuei-Jung called from the perspective of sustainable forestry and chain-of-custody certification for Taiwan to develop private forest sustainable management and domestic market consumption awareness.

Call for Mainstreaming Actions, Unite National Conservation Awareness

This forum fully demonstrated the importance of cross-ministry, cross-industry, and cross-disciplinary cooperation, from government policies, corporate practices to local actions and alignment with international standards, constructing a new blueprint for Taiwan's biodiversity governance. TAISE hopes through award mechanisms and platform exchanges to gather more conservation momentum, and calls on the public to embrace natural values together, safeguarding the future of diverse life for the next generation.
