Darul Hana Redevelopment: Inclusive Urban Renewal
Darul Hana is a 722-acre, people-centred urban renewal programme led by the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) for traditional villages in Kuching, Sarawak. The programme addresses overcrowded housing, narrow access, poor drainage, flood exposure and limited space for family growth while preserving community identity and Malay architectural character. It combines Social Impact Assessment, household census data, participatory engagement, grievance management, phased resettlement, affordable housing, infrastructure, public amenities and livelihood opportunities. The wider programme covers 4,426 families and 16,986 residents. Documented delivery includes 486 housing units in Darul Hana and a 209-unit scheme at Sungai Bedaun for extended families. Community acceptance rose from 10% in 2010 to 95% in 2022. In 2025, LCDA focused on scaling the model through Phase 2 preparation for 564 families, housing- layout engagement, smart-city and education planning, and knowledge sharing with other public authorities.
