Taoyuan Old Town Sustainable Regeneration Initiative
The old town districts around Taoyuan and Zhongli railway stations have long faced aging public facilities, declining commercial activity, and unsafe, pedestrian-unfriendly street conditions. Taoyuan City Government has launched a comprehensive regeneration of these districts built on three principles: human-centered design, aesthetics, and public art. The goal is a more walkable and appealing old town that people want to explore on foot. Work proceeds in short-term, medium- term and long-term phases and covers human-centered street redesign, cultural preservation and interpretation, inclusive public-space design, local participation, and cross-agency coordination. Together, these measures reshape the physical environment and daily life of the old town and build a model that other high-density old urban districts can adapt. The project's primary contribution is to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), with further contributions to SDG 3, 8, 9, 10, 13, and 17. It treats social inclusion, environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and local revitalization as parts of one governance effort rather than separate goals.
