Taichung Smart Agriculture: Advancing Sustainability through Data Governance
Taichung City adopts smart agriculture as a local sustainable transition strategy in response to climate change, rural aging, agricultural labor shortages, and water resource pressures. Through the establishment of demonstration sites, the integration of data platforms, and cross-disciplinary alliance governance, the city is driving the transformation of agriculture from experience-based management to data-driven decision-making. The initiative encompasses practical cases spanning the tea, mushroom, floriculture, and apiculture industries, as well as the Soybean ESG Sustainable Smart Farming Alliance. By integrating environmental monitoring, smart irrigation, image interpretation, Traceable Agricultural Products (TAP), and brand channels, these efforts enhance production efficiency, resource utilization effectiveness, and industrial resilience. The Taichung experience demonstrates how local governments can drive sustainable agricultural transformation through institutionalization, platformization, and alliance-building, serving as a valuable reference model for agricultural cities across the Asia-Pacific region as they navigate climate risks and pursue industrial upgrading.
