Sleeves Up to Shine: Tzu Chi's Life-Saving Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation
Tzu Chi’s promotion of hematopoietic stem cell donation is rooted in Master Cheng Yen’s vow to “respect life and save life,” giving patients with severe blood disorders a renewed chance at survival. Since establishing its registry in 1993, Tzu Chi has integrated medical expertise, volunteer care, charitable aid, and international connection into an integrated life-saving model: medical matching × volunteer accompaniment × charitable support × global cooperation. To counter misconceptions that donation harms the body and alleviate registry aging, Tzu Chi’s Stem Cell Donation Care Group thoroughly accompanies donors through matching notification, Confirmatory Typing (CT), physical exam, donation collection, and long-term follow-up—ensuring each life-saving act is fulfilled with reassurance and respect. By the end of 2025, cumulative voluntary donors reached 493,984, with 7,118 completed transplants across 31 countries and regions. This act of rolling up sleeves has brought renewed hope to global patients, making Taiwan a steadfast force in the international life-saving network.
