Creating sustainable wastewater discharge: New agriculture with water-saving and carbon-reducing
Taiwan ranks 18th globally among water-scarce countries. Currently, there are 82 water resource recovery centers nationwide that collect household wastewater daily, producing 1.46 billion tons of treated discharge water annually. This project, conducted in Yangmei District, Taoyuan City, pioneers the direct use of treated discharge water for rice cultivation, a major staple crop in Asia. Through water quality testing and scientific irrigation, four rice planting cycles have been completed, producing a high-yield, low-carbon rice variety called " Carbon Rice." The project also innovatively discovered that ammonia nitrogen in the treated water can partially replace chemical fertilizers, reducing production costs and greenhouse gas emissions caused by over-fertilization. This initiative demonstrates the government's role in promoting water recycling and agricultural carbon reduction, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2.4, 6.4, 11.5, 12.2, and 13.2.
