Sustainable Highways: Starting from the heart of Nantou
Provincial Highways 3 and 14, two important highways in Nantou, intersect in Caotun, forming a transportation hub leading to Sun Moon Lake, Qingjing Farm and Hehuan Mountain. Provincial Highway 14B, the main route for Zhongxing New Village and Nantou City, experiences heavy tourist traffic during holidays. The areas around these highways are densely resided by two-thirds of Nantou's population, and facing issues such as pedestrian safety, and congested commercial districts, bringing more complex challenges to the transportation engineering. In response to the UN's "2030 Sustainable Development Goals", a highway transformation plan with 5 aspects, 13 guidelines, and 41 specific tasks has been implemented. By using the "Graphic Signs", drivers can navigate intuitively. The "Off-center left-turn lanes, central channelizing lines, and lane narrowing" are carried out to improve traffic order, and decrease carbon emissions. "People-oriented" designs are used in the areas of heavy traffic to protect pedestrians, and to move toward "SDG9, SDG13, and SDG11". Starting from Nantou and involving cross-departmental efforts, we hope to create a happy and friendly sustainable "heart" highway.
