Application of AI recognition system to detect highly polluting scooters
Taichung City actively develops technology to manage air quality in order to achieve SDG11.6 “Reduce the negative impact of air pollution on the city” and SDG3.9 “Reduce the diseases caused by air pollution”.
Taichung City is a vibrant city with rapid growth in population, commerce, industry, and scooters. By the end of 2021, Taichung City have 2.92 million vehicles, of which about 1.78 million are scooters, accounting for about 61%. Exhaust gas from scooters caused management challenges. If the scooters are not properly maintained, it is easy to produce white smoke. In order to save manpower, the Environmental Protection Bureau has set up the camera system at important intersections and roads, and developed AI technology to identify exhausting smoke scooters. Since 2020, a total of 2,806,050 scooter photos have been taken and 22,496 highly polluting scooters have been inspected. Which could improve the air quality of the city and protect the people from the diseases caused by air pollution.
