Central and local governments take a leap forward in sustainable governance

Seminar on Sustainable Governance in Government
Central and Local Governments Make a Leap Forward in Sustainable Governance

In response to the international trend, more and more companies are actively investing in the sustainability sector. As a long-time observer of sustainability issues in Taiwan, Ambassador Eugene Chien, Chairman of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), recognizes the efforts of the public sector and looks forward to continued public-private collaboration to achieve the 2050 net zero goal.

Subtitle: Ambassador Chien, Chairman of Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), and the lecturers took a group photo with seminar guests.

Chairman Chien also mentioned that the international community passed the Paris Agreement in 2015 to set the temperature control target by the end of the century, and our country also proposed a 2050 net zero commitment. The Climate Change Act clearly outlines the division of labor among Taiwan’s central ministries, and county and municipal governments must also work together to implement the law in order to promote the overall transformation of society.

Also in 2015, the United Nations proposed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030, with this year being an important intermediate year. Countries will be reviewing and reporting on their progress to date. He believes that Taiwan has accumulated a lot of sustainability achievements, especially in the past two years, when the public sector has released a number of voluntary review reports (VNR/VDR/VLR), all of which are very exciting.

Subtitle: In his speech, Ambassador Chien called for a public-private partnership to mobilize all people to achieve the 2050 Net Zero goal.

Last year, the National Council for Sustainable Development established a tracking system for sustainable development goals, and released the second National Voluntary Review Report to provide the international community with an understanding of Taiwan's progress in promoting sustainable development goals. In particular, in the area of international partnerships, Taiwan's use of environmentally friendly technologies to assist friendly countries in improving their food and water environments and implementing waste treatment and utilization are examples of concrete efforts to promote a sustainable vision.

TAISE recently held a "Governmental Sustainable Governance Workshop" to link resources across regions and promote the exchange of experiences among government personnel at all levels of sustainable business, attracting 160 participants from over 80 organizations. In addition to lectures and experience sharing, the event also included a "World Café" to reflect on government strategies to promote sustainability from the perspective of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Values.

To promote public communication and civic participation, Tainan City's mayor has convened a committee to integrate various bureaus and departments and publish a self-examination report. Tainan City's goal is to improve its economy, transportation, and health, and to achieve environmental, thermal, and cultural and educational sustainability.
