Protecting our land and sea with action: 2023 Taiwan Biodiversity Awards is open for registration
To echo the international trend of biodiversity development and to encourage all sectors to pay attention to biodiversity issues, the Executive Committee of the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Award is holding the inaugural “2023 Taiwan Biodiversity Awards” (TWBA) to recognize public and private sectors that have made outstanding achievements and contributions to the practice of biodiversity. The award ceremony will be held in conjunction with the first “Taiwan Biodiversity Forum” on May 22nd to highlight the fruitful achievements of Taiwan's partners to accelerate the realization of harmony between human beings and nature. Applications for the awards are now open, and stakeholders from all sectors are welcome to apply.
Ambassador Eugene Chien, Chairman of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy, said that the 15th United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) reached a historic global agreement, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, in which more than 190 countries agreed to protect 30% of the world's land and sea areas by 2030 (the 30x30 target). The Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework specifies 23 short-term action targets for 2030, including "Target 15," which encourages companies to assess and disclose their dependence on and impact on local and global biodiversity to ensure that their mining, production, sourcing, supply chain, use and disposal processes are fully compatible with sustainable development. The "biodiversity target" will be a new issue that governments and enterprises will have to actively face after meeting the "greenhouse gas emission reduction" target of the Paris Agreement.
Ambassador Chien further stated that the award is expected to raise public and private sector awareness of biodiversity issues and to encourage companies to actively participate in the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), and "Nature Action 100" to publicly disclose information on organizations’ dependence and impact on biodiversity, strengthen dialogue with stakeholders, and gather the public's vision and consensus on biodiversity, as well as to protect Taiwan's local ecology through practical conservation and effective educational actions.
This year, the Taiwan Biodiversity Awards has four major components, namely, 1) "Organizational Linkages with Biodiversity," 2) "Strategies and Innovative Actions to Promote Biodiversity," 3) "Project Examples of Using Ecosystem Services," and 4) "Performance and Impact of Biodiversity Enhancement. The Taiwan Biodiversity Awards will not only enhance the reputation and branding of participating organizations, but also serve as a reference for future investors to select institutions for investment. TCSA sincerely invites applications to set a standard for biodiversity. For details of the selection process and activities, please refer to the official website.
