Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation 佛教慈濟醫療財團法人大林慈濟醫院

The Climate Action of the Hospital - Race to Zero by 2050
The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation established the first Tzu Chi hospital- Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital in western Taiwan in August 2000 due to the lack of healthcare resources in the Chiayi area. The hospital's mission is to "safeguard and protect life, health with love" and not just to treat patients but also to provide health promotion programs for people in the community and reduce the environmental impact on the planet. The primary mission of Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital is to improve the quality of medical care for our patients. However, we also recognize that climate change is humanity's most significant health challenge in the 21st century. Therefore, we have committed to reducing our environmental impact while treating patients and promoting the health of our community. We have implemented green hospital programs within our hospital and in the community, and we have shared our experiences with others worldwide.
Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital has implemented various strategies to reduce its carbon footprint and in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, for example SDG3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 13 and 17. For energy efficiency, the hospital has adopted a heat-pump water heating system, installed inverters, monitored the operative time of the extractor machine, used electric-saving lighting equipment, and improved the automatic sensor lighting in public areas. The hospital has also adopted a 48.5 kW solar energy system on the rooftop, provided free bicycles in staff dormitories, and free shuttle bus services for patients to take public transportation. The hospital has established the Intelligent Building Energy Monitoring System (IBEMS) to monitor electricity consumption in different departments. It has trained all staff and outsourcers for detailed recycling in the hospital.
With the guidance of our Drama Master Cheng-Yen and the support of the leadership at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, the Health Promoting Hospital(HPH) Committee's Environment Friendly Hospital subcommittee. Under the committee, we regularly monitor energy and water usage and have implemented green hospital initiatives. The hospital has built connections with international NGOs and attended international conferences to learn and share. We have joined GGHH as a member hospital, which allows us to learn from the outstanding performance of other hospitals and share our case studies. Since 2021, we have joined the United Nations Race to Zero Campaign and pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. We adopted the Climate Impact Checkup Tool to evaluate emissions. The total emission is 9546.49 tCO2e; Scope 1 is 8%, Scope 2 is 80%, and Scope 3 is 12%. The baseline year is 2021 and we could regularly measure the GHG emissions and complete more sections, especially for Scope 3. These results also could be the reference for establishing the mitigation action plans.
We hope to contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change and protect the health and well-being of future generations.
