Sunsets over Salt Fields – Traditional Industries and Sustainable Tourism Along the Southwest Coast
Since 2003, the Southwest Coast National Scenic Area Administration has planned tourism based on resources within its jurisdiction. It is working to make the corridor from Kouhu to Annan, with nearly 100 kilometres of coastline across three cities and counties, a sustainable tourism destination with international development potential.
In addition to sandbars, lagoons, and wetlands, a salt-making industry developed around 1818. The Jingzaijiao Tile-Paved Salt Fields are the oldest in Taiwan and now provide experiential activities. This story was one of the 2021 Top 100 Destination Sustainable Stories.
    1. Community participation
Volunteer training is conducted by local NGOs, and 15% of guided tour revenues go to the communities.
    2. Cultural revitalization
Veteran salt workers restored the salt fields and trained a new generation of salt workers. A “salt field literary path” and promotional videos were created.
3.Environmental education and low carbon tourism
The Southwest Salt Fields and Wetlands Environmental Education Center opened in 2012. Low-carbon travel is encouraged by promoting cycling paths and activities and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle route.
