The Making of Hsinchu Living Museum for Social Inclusion and Common Good
Undertaken by the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) for the last three years, the “Hsinchu Living Museum” is an initiative derived from the “Good Neighborliness Residency Project at the Big Chimney Factory Base” commissioned by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Hsinchu City. Under the auspices of the NYCU and guided by the philosophy of “Living Metaphor.Living Museum,” this initiative seeks to establish a museum for the Sixth Fuel Factory by naming this cultural asset under incubation as the “Hsinchu Living Museum” and actively engaging in content production and down-to-earth praxis. “Living Metaphor.Living Museum” implies founding the Hsinchu Living Museum by virtue of humanistic reflection, smart technology, artistic praxis, sustainable design, and ecological conservation. In terms of content, it applies the concept of living metaphor as a response to the issues like wartime history, memory, life, and ecology, hence a museum embodying the values of symbiosis, inclusion, and reconciliation. Living refers to the close connection among livelihood, vitality, ecology, and production, with a special focus on symbiosis and reciprocity. Here, production proceeds not only in the cultural and economic sectors, but also includes the reproduction of the protected Asian parti-colored bats at the Big Chimney, the revitalization and recreation of cultural assets, as well as the high-tech industry in the Hsinchu Science Park. More importantly, by building this living museum with concerted efforts, we can create a cooperative, symbiotic relationship among different groups and species, in which dialogue, bonding, and operation mechanism will be forged, insofar as to marching towards a reciprocal and inclusive society.
