    and Awards Ceremony

The Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) hosted the "2025 Taiwan Retail Sustainability Forum" on January 14 at the National Taiwan University Hospital International Convention Center, where it also presented the inaugural "Taiwan Retail Sustainability Awards." The event spotlighted innovations in the retail sector amid net-zero and circular economy trends, recognizing outstanding Taiwanese companies and professionals for their sustainability governance, decarbonization efforts, and value chain impacts—injecting green momentum into Taiwan's retail industry and paving the way for transformation. Industry, government, and academic leaders shared insights, including Wen-Ling Su, Director-General of the Bureau of Commerce at the Ministry of Economic Affairs; Li-Ru Chen, Dean of the College of Urban Governance at Taipei City University; Cheng-Hsien Yang, Vice General Manager of Far Eastern SOGO; Ding-Ming Li, General Manager of Da Ai Gratitude Technology; and Xiao-Zhen Su, Sustainability Officer at Jia Fu Company. A combined 512 attendees joined online and in person.

Industry, Government, and Academia Unite to Champion SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

TAISE Chairman Eugene Chien reviewed the foundation's 18 years of sustainability efforts, noting that retail channels bridge production and consumption—making them pivotal to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12). TAISE launched the "Taiwan Retail Sustainability Awards" this year to inspire companies toward full-chain management from design and packaging to transportation and recycling, embedding sustainability into daily operations. Director-General Wen-Ling Su highlighted that commerce accounts for about one-fifth of national carbon emissions, with leading retailers adopting building energy savings, efficient equipment, and low-carbon operations marking a major milestone toward Taiwan's 2050 net-zero goal.

Keynote Insights: Charting the Roadmap to Net-Zero Retail

In her keynote, Director-General Wen-Ling Su introduced "value consumption" and "conscious consumption," noting most consumers will pay a premium for sustainable products. She outlined government resources like energy audits, equipment subsidies, carbon inventories, and circular packaging support, urging businesses to seize green opportunities in the sustainability shift. Dean Li-Ru Chen of Taipei City University's College of Urban Governance then analyzed global trends through the "Triple Bottom Line" framework, using IKEA as a case study to stress embedding sustainability in culture, products, and customer interactions for lasting competitive edges.
Case studies followed: Far Eastern SOGO Vice General Manager Cheng-Hsien Yang detailed "painless transformation" via AI energy management, e-gift cards, and farmers' markets for easy green adoption; Da Ai Gratitude Technology General Manager Ding-Ming Li explained recycling PET bottles into functional textiles while targeting plastic bags and ocean microfibers; Jia Fu Sustainability Officer Xiao-Zhen Su shared the "i-Start" labeling and cage-free egg promotion, proving retailers can drive upstream agriculture transformation for "mutual prosperity" sustainability.

    Act Now: Building Resilience Together

TAISE highlighted how policy advocacy, benchmarking, and knowledge sharing built a cross-sector dialogue platform, deepening consensus on sustainable retail. The "2025 4th Asia-Pacific Sustainability Expo" opens in September with spots filling fast—exhibitors welcome. The "2026 Taiwan Retail Sustainability Awards" will open for entries in October. TAISE calls on more Taiwanese firms to join the net-zero journey, positioning Taiwan as Asia's sustainability leader.
