Waste-to-Wealth
Dapi Township in Yunlin County is one of Taiwan’s most important centers for pickled mustard greens production. However, the traditional manufacturing process generates high-salinity brine and vegetable residues. If improperly managed, these by-products can lead to soil salinization, water pollution, and substantial treatment costs. This project adopts biological circular reuse technology to convert such waste into liquid fertilizer derived from pickled mustard greens. The resulting fertilizer partially replaces chemical fertilizers and commercially reducing feed costs for aquaculture operators by approximately 20%–40%. In addition, the survival rate of aquatic species such as hard clams is expected to increase by about 10%, with growth rates improving by 8%–15%. For every metric ton of waste liquid treated, approximately 180 kg of CO-equivalent emissions can be reduced, along with an 80% reduction in waste treatment costs. The project demonstrates how cross-sector collaboration can transform local resources into sustainable value, serving as a flagship model for Yunlin’s journey toward net-zero emissions, green growth, and sustainable urban development.
