Slow Travel in Nanzhuang: Sustainable Beauty of the Mountain Town
Since achieving International Cittaslow certification in 2016, Nanzhuang, Miaoli, has embraced "Slowly Traveling, Just Right," blending Hakka, Atayal, and Saisiyat cultures into its mountain landscape. More than a mountain town, it is a practice of sustainability and aesthetics, fostering harmony between humans and the land. To deepen this heritage, the Tri-Mountain Administration guided local businesses through transformations. The historic Nanzhuang Dongcun Dormitory was revitalized into a Japanese-style lodge. While preserving memories, it secured the GTS Good Travel Seal and Muslim certification, aligning local heritage with global standards. Furthermore, the Nanzhuang Flower Festival fosters inclusion by collaborating with indigenous artisans and the Old School Art Association to reshape the town’s image and showcase intergenerational aesthetics. Promoting ethnic harmony, partnership with local tribes led to itineraries like the Saisiyat Table, ensuring tourism benefits flow back to indigenous communities. This integration of cultural heritage and sustainable economy drives Nanzhuang's revitalization, making its beauty deep through slowness and eternal through sustainability
