Sustainable Coastal Revitalization:Building a Marine Citizen Science and Community Inclusion Network
This project is implemented in coastal fishing villages along Taiwan’s Provincial Highway 17 in Kaohsiung, addressing ghost nets, limited coral ecological data, and insufficient public awareness of marine conservation. By integrating university expertise with local schools, NGOs, and community partners, the project promotes ghost-net removal, coral ecological monitoring, and marine environmental education. Aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water), the project adopts three strategies: data-driven marine governance, a marine citizen science education network, and community-based governance. Key achievements include ghost- net removal in artificial reef protected areas, long-term coral monitoring along Taiwan’s west coast, and cross-sector partnerships. The project has established a replicable model for marine conservation, environmental education, and sustainable coastal development.
