A Green ERAS Pathway: Net-Zero Recovery for the Elderly
Patients over 80 undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) often face prolonged hospitalizations due to functional decline and comorbidities, increasing medical resource consumption and environmental burdens. To address this, our project implemented the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) model. Led by case managers, a multidisciplinary team established an integrated pathway covering preoperative assessment, pain control, early mobilization, and standardized care. Validating 269 cases from 2022 to 2025, the ERAS compliance rate reached 83.6%. Echoing SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), we maintained a 0% prosthetic infection rate and zero complications. Fulfilling SDG 13 (Climate Action), the average length of stay (LOS) was reduced by 1.03 days. Shortening LOS and optimizing care significantly improved bed turnover and efficiency while lowering energy consumption and carbon emissions. This protocol is now institutionalized into routine clinical pathways, realizing the sustainable values of geriatric health, quality care, and carbon reduction, ultimately creating a replicable and scalable geriatric-friendly green healthcare model.
