Gorgas Campus Project — Phase I (Republic of Panama)
The Gorgas Campus Project (Phase I) strengthens the Panama´s national and regional capacity in scientific research, epidemiological surveillance, and outbreak response, while fostering innovation in public health. By expanding ICGES’s capabilities, it positions the institute as a leading public health and research hub in Central America. The project strengthens Health Innovation System through the construction and equipping of a modern campus for the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES). Located adjacent to Ciudad de la Salud, the project replaces outdated facilities with state-of-the-art infrastructure that enhances operational efficiency and complies with international biosafety standards. With a total investment of US$75.86 million, financed through a US$70 million loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and US$5.86 million in Government of Panama counterpart funding, Phase I delivers 18,025 m² of specialized facilities, including Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories, administrative areas, training spaces, and security infrastructure.
