Study MIC and biofilm–steel interaction via electrospinning and EPS to support SDGs.
This project focuses on the development of environmentally friendly underwater anti-corrosion and sensing systems by integrating fiber optic corrosion sensing, electrospun nanofibers, and microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) technologies. The key objectives include:
(1) the fabrication of a marine-inspired fiber optic underwater sensor for real-time corrosion monitoring;
(2) the development of drug-encapsulating nanofiber coatings via electrospinning to enhance the protection of carbon steel materials; and
(3) the construction of EPS-based sustainable coatings for low-carbon steel structures to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The EPS coatings developed in this project can promote the formation of protective microbial biofilms in marine environments, suppress metal corrosion, and avoid heavy metal pollution and seawater acidification caused by traditional sacrificial anodes. EPS has metal-chelating properties and forms stable protective films, while the electrospun biomimetic fiber structure enhances the coating’s functional performance.
The project also investigates the performance of the coatings under varying conditions of salinity, dissolved
