Sustainable Agricultural Transformation: Carbon Reduction and Carbon Sink Increase FIRST
In 2020, Yunlin County's agricultural sector emitted 694.69 thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Agricultural electricity (84%), agricultural soil (42%), and rice emissions (23%) were significantly higher than the national average. To address this, the government plans to reduce rice field emissions and enhance dry land carbon sinks.
In 2024, a study in Dapi Township showed that applying microbial preparations to rice fields reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 77% and increased rice yields by roughly 5.4%. This was achieved by positively influencing soil microbial composition, nutrient cycles, and rice growth.
Additionally, a study in Gukeng Township on an organic dryland area revealed that soil organic carbon content after 10 years of organic farming was three times higher than after a one-year organic transition period. This translates to a potential reduction of about 10.18 metric tons of CO2e per hectare for each 60-day dry farming period.
