Taichung Sky Greenway - The rebirth of the old railway and a sustainable future
Project Background:
The Taichung Railway once spurred economic growth but divided the city physically and socially. After its elevation in 2016, the freed ground-level space enabled urban regeneration and reconnected previously split areas. Taichung transformed the 21.7-kilometer corridor into a linear green corridor that encourages eco-friendly living and improves urban livability.
Implementation Strategy and Achievements:
The "Taichung Metropolitan Area Elevated Railway and MRT Project" resolved spatial fragmentation and introduced the "Sky Greenway"—an eco-friendly, cycling-oriented space. This 21.7-kilometer green spine integrates ecology, recreation, and sustainability. With strategies like stepping-stone ecological patches, energy saving, and carbon reduction, it links ecosystems from mountains to coastal areas and drives Taichung’s path toward a sustainable future.
