Light Up Taiwan Eco Friendly Environment Lighting Project: Matsu Rhagophthalmus Firefly Conservation
In 2024, LEOTEK, in collaboration with the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency (FANCA), Lienchiang County Government, and Chinese Culture University, launched the “Light Up Taiwan: Eco-Friendly Environment Lighting Project:Matsu Rhagophthalmus Firefly Conservation Action.” This pioneering effort introduced the world’s first ECOridge ecological lighting system in the protected area of the rare female Rhagophthalmus firefly in Beigan, Matsu. The system features a dominant wavelength of 590nm amber light and less than 2% blue light content—scientifically proven by Chinese Culture University to reduce light pollution by over 70% and protect the firefly’s reproductive and bioluminescent behavior.
As an endemic and vulnerable species, the female Rhagophthalmus firefly requires a dark-sky environment to sustain its lifecycle. The project received official certification under FANCA’s Nature-Based Carbon Sink and Biodiversity Program, aligning with international standards such as IUCN and TNFD.
