Algae Loop: Sustainable Wastewater Recycling and Resource Valorization for Livestock Farms
The Algae Loop project tackles livestock wastewater issues in rural Taiwan by integrating locally adapted microalgae technology. At its pilot site “Farm Around You,” nutrient-rich wastewater from small farms is converted into bio-resources like organic fertilizers, protein-rich feed, and soil conditioners. A modular smart cultivation system removes nitrogen and phosphorus, captures CO₂ through photosynthesis, and improves water quality—helping lower greenhouse gas emissions. The harvested biomass supports a closed-loop circular agricultural economy. NFU’s technical team aids in system deployment, farmer training, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. A local farmer alliance helps reduce costs and enhance shared value. Involving government, researchers, industry, and students, the project promotes green jobs, boosts rural resilience, and offers a replicable model for sustainable agriculture across Asia-Pacific.
