Shibi Bamboo Forest: A Community-based Forest Therapy Model for Sustainability
The Yunlin Caoling Forest Therapy Base revitalizes a 516-hectare bamboo forest in Caoling, Gukeng Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan. Blending low-carbon bamboo architecture, forest therapy, and carbon sinks. Actions include thinning Moso bamboo, restoring native hardwoods, and building eco-trails to boost biodiversity and carbon sequestration, aiding Taiwan’s 2050 Net-Zero goal.
15 local groups, including indigenous and women’s associations, co-manage the area. Inclusive education programs feature sensory trails and barrier-free access for seniors and people with disabilities, promoting health equity and preserving bamboo, tea, and native traditions.
The project fosters bamboo ecotourism, low-carbon cuisine, and green products, creating rural jobs and green health tourism. Caoling’s recognition as the first “World Bamboo Landmark” boosts global visibility and positions it as a forest therapy hub in Asia.
