Sustainable Farming and Eating:Food and Agriculture Education Drives Low-Carbon Transition
Taoyuan City is Taiwan’s gateway and the granary of northern Taiwan, actively promotes smart agriculture by integrating it with food and agriculture education. The Department of Agriculture has introduced “smart production” and adopted “local production for local consumption” as a core strategy—encouraging schools and citizens to prioritize local produce to reduce transportation distance and carbon footprint.
The city also promotes food and agriculture education via school lunches and outdoor learning experiences, helping citizens better understand the connection between agriculture and the environment. The aim is to foster economic growth, create more job opportunities, and promote a green, sustainable lifestyle—ultimately achieving both ecological balance and social well-being.
The plan prioritizes reducing carbon emissions in agricultural production to mitigate the impact of climate change. It also focuses on increasing public awareness and willingness to consume local agricultural products, advancing agricultural development and protecting farmers’ rights, and ensures that sustainability and environmental responsibility remain central to Taoyuan’s growth.
