A Pathway for Sustainability: Transforming Livestock Waste into Agricultural Assets
The Environmental Protection Bureau of Tainan City Government recognizes that rigorous inspection and penalty policies only treated the symptoms, and establishing partnerships between the government and farmers can be the fundamental solutions. By cooperating with livestock industry and providing governmental subsidies, livestock manure and wastewater can be turned into “gold”. The Bureau encourages farmers to actively participate in equipment upgrades and optimization decisions to solve the environmental issues. Until 2023, a total of 288 livestock farms across the City have been approved for livestock wastewater resource utilization projects. It is conservatively estimated that approximately 1.57 million tons of livestock wastewater can be reduced annually and prevent from being discharged into rivers, with 390 hectares of irrigated area. According to statistics, reduced the project can reduce the usage of nearly 20,000 bags of chemical fertilizers.
