Yun Fertilizer, sustainable virtuous cycle of food
Yunlin County, a leading agricultural region in Taiwan, ranks first nationally in pig farming. To combat African swine fever, it banned food waste for pig feed in December 2018. The county promotes a comprehensive food waste recycling strategy, focusing on source reduction, food and agriculture education, low-carbon living, and local characteristics. In Kouhu Township, black soldier fly larvae digest food waste, creating natural soil improvement materials. Sorted raw and cooked food waste is crushed, dehydrated, and converted into "Yun Fertilizer" with Nan Ya Plastics Corporation. This certified organic fertilizer is distributed to local communities, institutions, schools, and residents. To support a sustainable and green city, "Yun Fertilizer" is used to grow fruits and vegetables, which are supplied to the local community and Evergreen Canteen. Seasonal local ingredients ensure healthy and safe meals for the elderly. This initiative positively impacts surrounding ecological vegetable and tea gardens and is endorsed by five-star chefs. Therefore, Yunlin County, through the aforementioned measures and initiatives, achieves the goal of "full recycling and zero waste of food waste."
