Reading Prescriptions: A Path to Early Literacy and Child Development
In remote Taiwan, 18–27% of children face developmental delays—well above global averages. A national survey found only 30% of parents read with children ≥4 times weekly, while one-third rarely do. Over 50% of parents abroad read 6–7 times a week.
To address this, our team launched the “Reading Prescription” initiative in 2015, inspired by the U.S.-based Reach Out and Read model. We integrate primary care, medical education, and community support. Physicians issue reading prescriptions—books and guidance—during clinic visits, linking families to shared reading resources.
After the pandemic, we developed an intergenerational telehealth shared reading model, connecting older adults with children remotely. We also use DLP voice tech to monitor language input and support early detection. The program is embedded in care and training, reaching rural and underserved areas.
The initiative earned dual SNQ certifications, showed high SROI, and was presented at WONCA, ISQua, and IHF. Results were published in domestic and international journals. Our team helped shape the CUSP (Common Understanding of Social Prescribing) framework and engages in policy advocacy for system-level reform.
