Zero Gaps in Public Health: Taoyuan’s AI-Driven Lung Cancer Screening Campaign
According to WHO, lung cancer is the top cause of cancer deaths globally. In Taiwan, it became the most common cancer since 2021. Lung adenocarcinoma, less related to smoking, is rising steadily. Studies show that over 70% of Taiwanese female lung cancer patients never smoked, highlighting the limits of screening policies focused solely on smokers.
To address challenges like missed nodules and limited rural access, Taoyuan launched Asia’s first precision screening model. It pioneered “high-risk factor–based classification” covering tobacco exposure, medical/family history, occupational hazards, and air/oil pollution. It also deployed an AI-assisted interpretation system, a cross-agency review and data integration mechanism, and mobile CT units to enhance equity and access.
From 2023 to Feb 2025, over 40,000 people were screened, detecting 233 cases—92% in early stages. The program could cut late-stage cancer risk by 78%, extend average life by 11 years, and boost productivity by US$17 million. Taoyuan’s smart health model shows high efficiency, innovation, and scalability for broader adoption.
