2050 Sustainable Net Zero: Building a Resilient Kaohsiung
Kaohsiung City has formulated many sustainable policies to lay the foundation for the city’s development into the next century. In terms of urban planning, Kaohsiung is developing Asia's advanced manufacturing hub, integrated with the Southern Semiconductor S Corridor, executed the urban railroad underground project, built green corridors and promoted the Kaohsiung LOHAS 3.0 project. In terms of disaster mitigation, Kaohsiung has promoted the construction of 26 flood detention ponds, the Water Monitoring Dense Network Project and the installation of permeable pavements. For transportation, Kaohsiung has launched shared transit services, friendly waiting spaces, bus electrification, Circular Light Rail, and the promotion of urban transit-oriented development (TOD) policies. In terms of the environment, Kaohsiung is promoting prevention and control through smart governance and encouraging the use of alternative fuels to foster a win-win effect of sustainability and improving the environment. In terms of housing, Kaohsiung is promoting the construction of 15,000 social housing units, offering housing subsidies, rent escrow programs, and the redevelopment of unsafe urban and old buildings to take care of the rights of the economically disadvantaged and youth. In terms of culture, Kaohsiung is committed to the adaptive reutilization of cultural heritage, revitalizing the Hakka language and culture, and preserving architectural landscapes. In terms of inclusivity and friendliness, Kaohsiung is building inclusive parks and creating public living open spaces focused on culture and ecology. Regarding climate action, Kaohsiung is promoting the four major transformations of energy, industry, life, and society and 20 key strategies. The city has constructed four reclaimed water plants, and promotes fishery-electricity symbiosis through industry networking and other related carbon reduction and adaptation policies. Under the concept of a livable and sustainable city, the Kaohsiung City Government has actively formulated relevant policies. The city has been recognized with many outstanding achievements, and compiled annual voluntary local review (VLR) reports to disclose the results and achievements, and will continue to bring the public a friendly and safe living environment.
