Intelligent early warning system promoting infant and child healthcare quality and industry
Parenthood is a major milestone in life. We are dedicated to achieving SDG 3, which aims to improve health and well-being, by addressing the lack of support and guidance for new parents due to changing family structures. In collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics at National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch since 2014, we have developed an innovative technology called "Infant Cry Recognition" using machine learning algorithms to identify different types of cries, including hunger, sleepiness, and wet diaper. This technology, launched as "Infant Cry Translator" on Google Play and App Store in 2015, successfully accumulated over 3 million cry samples, leading to significant improvements in identification accuracy and effectiveness. We have developed the world's only customizable infant cry recognition, helping parents understand their baby's needs better.
We have expanded our success in infant cry detection and recognition to develop a comprehensive intelligent infant monitoring system, integrating regurgitation and covered face detection, heart rate, and respiration detection. This system enhances newborn care, enables early warning, and reduces accidents, making it easier for new parents to care for their infants and young children. It also reduces pressure and anxiety on mothers, providing them more time to engage in work or hobbies, improving their psychological health and self-worth (SDG 8). Our relevant technology has obtained six patents in Taiwan and the United States and has been successfully commercialized and technology-transferred to various enterprises, such as Unicharm in Japan, Compal Electronics, POINT CIRCLE TECHNOLOGY CO., LIMITED, and Industrial Technology Research Institute. Also expanding to hospitals, postpartum care centers, and general consumers, and furthermore promoted to overseas markets, such as Europe, the United States, and Japan, to expand its application and influence (SDG 17).
Our "contactless heart rate and respiratory monitor" is not only applied to infant care but also widely used in pandemic prevention, assisting in COVID-19 prevention. It has received high recognition, including the 2020 Future Tech Award from the National Science Council and the 2022 Ukraine Invention Gold Award. We collaborated with the Industrial Technology Research Institute and Insight Vision Co. to develop a "contactless physiological detection micro-robot" that combines contactless heart rate and respiratory monitor with thermal detection to monitor physiological signals. This technology was introduced to National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Hospital (Xinmin Branch) and Hsinchu SOL Hotel (epidemic prevention hotel) for field verification in 2021 during COVID-19 to overcome medical personnel shortages and service capacity inadequacy, minimizing contact between people and achieving "zero physical contact, service without distance." This technology is crucial to the development of Taiwan's pandemic prevention and medical care industry, improving the health risk early warning system and combating infectious diseases and reducing the mortality rate caused by non-communicable diseases.
