AI can help! A Novel AI-assisted Screening and Referral Module for Diabetic Retinopathy
The Department of Ophthalmology, Taipei City Hospital, is committed to developing a holistic community-oriented health care system. In view of diabetic retinopathy is a common vision-threatening complication, retinal screening is vital for diabetic patients. The conventional exam is cumbersome, so the screening rate in Taiwan remained low. We have collaborated with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to develop an artificial Intelligent-assisted interpretation system for diabetic retinopathy grading to improve screening and referrals. The AI system was trained using over 20000 images of local patients. The portability is replicated in communities/clinics to assist physician decisions. We help pinpoint asymptomatic patients with diabetes suspect and address the responsibility of public health by adhering to preventive medicine. Through our professional medical team and collaborators (ITRI, community resources), this system can be applied to the frontlines of the community to contribute to SDGs 3 Health and well-being, SDGs 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure and SDGs 17 Building multi-partnerships to fully demonstrate the unique characteristics of a sustainable public hospital.
