Houston-Apollo Project: An Innovative Action for Polypharmacy of Older People in Remote Areas
In 2015, the United Nations' "The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" highlighted global aging as a challenge, also prevalent in Taiwan, particularly rural Yunlin. The National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch launched the "Houston Apollo Project" (HAP) in 2018 to enhance rural seniors' health equity, aligning with United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals: SDG3 and SDG10. Over five years, it has served nearly 900 seniors through collaborations with local medical providers.
To address the prevalent issue of polypharmacy among the elderly, HAP implemented comprehensive assessments and launched the "Intelligent AI Polypharmacy System" in 2022. The AI system, capable of recognizing medications and retrieving medication information, eliminates time-consuming processes and helps bridge health and medical inequalities among the elderly by providing equal access to healthcare resources, reducing polypharmacy risks, and improving medication safety, thereby significantly improving health outcomes for elderly individuals in remote regions.
