Customized Non-circular Sprockets for Bicycles: Strengthening the Development of the Bicycle Industry
Customized Non-circular Sprockets for Bicycles: Strengthening the Development of the Bicycle Industry
Not only do we aim to promote a sustainable economy in collaboration with other industries and academic institutions, but we also hope to improve the efficiency of bicycle riding and encourage the use of bicycles.
National Formosa University has been actively promoting sustainable development for many years. We established the "Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility" as a first-level unit to promote the development of the university's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of university social responsibility (USR) related matters.
In order to concretely implement the 17 SDGs indicators and balance the three major areas of "society," "economy," and "environment," the Office has also set up three units: the "USR Center (University Social Responsibility Center)," the "Community Engagement Learning Group," and the "Sustainable Development Learning Group," to coordinate related businesses and continue to focus on sustainable development issues.
In the post-pandemic era of economic recovery in 2021, our unit is concerned about the rising global climate issues. Low-carbon energy transformation and climate change adaptation have become global trends. Taiwan, as an export-oriented economy, is facing the requirements of the international green supply chain and the regulatory mechanism of the European border adjustment. The transition to net-zero has become a necessary condition for maintaining international competitiveness in the industry. To promote low-carbon energy transformation, bicycles are considered a sustainable mode of transportation because they do not emit exhaust pollution like cars and other motorized vehicles.
The president of our university, Hsin-Liang Chang, believes that developing the bicycle industry can be one way to address the global warming problem. Not only can bicycles provide people with an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, but they can also promote sustainable economic development. Firstly, the bicycle industry can create job opportunities, as large amounts of human resources are required for production, sales, and maintenance. These job opportunities can directly or indirectly drive the development of related industries. Furthermore, the bicycle industry can stimulate consumer demand, thereby promoting the development of other related industries such as bicycle parts and bicycle tourism. In addition, the bicycle industry can also promote the development of regional tourism, such as the development of bicycle-friendly cities or bicycle tourism routes, which can attract more tourists and promote local economic development. Moreover, the development of the bicycle industry can promote sustainable urban development. For example, by building bicycle lanes and providing bicycle-sharing programs, more people can be encouraged to use bicycles, which can reduce urban traffic congestion and air pollution, improving the quality of the urban environment. In summary, the development of the bicycle industry can promote sustainable economic development, as well as contribute to sustainable urban development and the popularization of green travel methods. Based on these reasons, we have decided to dedicate ourselves to the development of the bicycle industry.
The bicycle industry is an important and globally competitive industry in our country, hence the title "Bicycle Kingdom". Its customization demands are increasing day by day. Further combining high-end applications, design customization capabilities, and product differentiation is an important strategy for the transformation and maintenance of competitiveness in the bicycle industry. Our school values the development of related products and has the opportunity to engage in technology transfer or license manufacturing and sales to help enhance the product prices of domestic bicycle industry and create another peak for the industry.
In August 2022, NFU made a groundbreaking discovery in the world of cycling with our "customized non-circular chainring for bicycles". The team of researchers applied the latest sports physiology technology to develop non-circular chainrings that could cater to the unique riding characteristics of each person. The research aimed to optimize riding efficiency, enhance the user's overall experience, and reduce the environmental impact of cycling.
Our groundbreaking innovation was recognized in October 2022 when we won the prestigious "Future Technology Award." The award recognized the hard work and dedication to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly cycling technology.
The chainring is an essential component of a bicycle's power system, and its design and maintenance play a crucial role in the bicycle's efficiency, durability, and maintenance cost. A poorly designed chainring or improper maintenance can lead to problems such as increased riding resistance, chain breakage, and decreased performance and service life of the bicycle. Such problems could discourage people from using bicycles, leading to more significant environmental impacts resulting from increased use of less eco-friendly transportation methods.
With the "customized non-circular chainring for bicycles," our team has taken a significant step towards promoting the use of bicycles as an eco-friendly mode of transportation. By designing chainrings that cater to each person's unique needs, we have made cycling a more comfortable and efficient activity. Our research project not only promotes sustainable management in environmental and economic fields but also influences people's attitudes and behaviors towards bicycle use. This innovative technology has the potential to revolutionize the cycling industry and promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
Principal Zhang Xinliang emphasized the potential of bicycles as a multifunctional product that can be used for transportation, recreation, racing, or cargo carrying. However, customization is crucial for achieving optimal performance due to differences in people's height, arm length, and leg joint pressure. Our non-circular chainring design addresses this issue by considering each person's riding characteristics.
In addition to the economic aspect, using bicycles as a low-carbon transportation method can also help achieve multiple aspects of sustainable development goals. For example, SDG 11 calls for the creation of safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities, and cycling can reduce urban traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, creating a more livable urban environment. At the same time, SDG 3 emphasizes the promotion of personal health and well-being, and cycling can improve people's physical and cardiorespiratory fitness while reducing the risk of some diseases.
Not only do we aim to promote a sustainable economy in collaboration with other industries and academic institutions, but we also hope to improve the efficiency of bicycle riding and encourage the use of bicycles.
