1 HOUSE FOR ALL
In the face of the transformation of contemporary family residence, insufficient infrastructure in the old town area, and the need for energy savings and carbon reduction for urban buildings, the ‘1 House for All’ emerges as an urban renewal program that provides mid-way house on idle lands in cities while residents have a long waiting period before integrated urban renewal projects are completed. The mid-way house in urban renewal is built using the circular construction method that has low carbon footprints. The housing aims to compensate for the waiting time and living space required before urban renewal projects are completed. From the perspective of social inclusion, ‘1 House for All’ caters to the needs for social housing of different types of families. ‘1 House for All’ is able to create an opportunity for people to live together and help each other. Meanwhile, open spaces are retained to serve as a basic urban infrastructure in the community. The housing also creates an opportunity for social inclusion of different dimensions, such as families, the community, and the city, which in accordance with SDG 9 to establish resilient infrastructure and create opportunities for social integration at the family, community, and urban levels, also accordance with SDG 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities. In order to maintain sustainable environment, the concept of circular design adopted by “1 House for All” allows transitional houses to be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly at different locations, creating opportunities for the utilization of idle space during the waiting period for urban renewal, which in line with SDG 12-Responsible Consumption and Production. Furthermore, by complementing an energy-saving architecture design, transitional houses can maintain a good quality of life with the lowest energy consumption, maximize the service life and efficiency of building materials, and minimize construction costs and carbon footprints. Therefore, it is an essential element of creating sustainable development, in which people and the environment can coexist, promoting the transformation of the construction industry into a low-carbon circular economy in Taiwan, which serves as a new solution to achieve SDG 7-Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 13- Climate Action. In 2022, the team of “1 House for All” flew to Germany to attend “the Solar Decathlon” to test the concept by rebuilding an on-site housing model. The team won a golden award for construction and a bronze medal for innovation. Currently, the “1 House for All” program is being implemented, and taking root in cities in Taiwan. It will help to make Taiwan a model of sustainable urban renewal.
