The Circular Economy of Plastic Reduction for Fresh Produce
As a social enterprise promoting sustainability, Leezen echoes with SDG-12 “responsible consumption and production" and SDG-14 “Life Below Water” and launched a Plastic-free Initiative. Taking on the role of an organic retailer, Leezen connects manufacturer partners and consumers to reduce plastic package in various categories. For the most challenging organic produce, Leezen develops an exclusive bio-bag certified by BPI and OK Compost to ensure organic integrity, freshness retention, and plastic reduction.
As there was no independent recycling system for bio-bags in Taiwan, Leezen initiated a scheme to encourage consumers to return used bags to the stores, which goes to compost after collected. By end 2021, Leezen and Fuyah jointly launched a "bio-pot" made from the recycled bags, proving the value of circular economy.
By implementing bio-bags, Leezen has saved nearly 4 million plastic bags per year and 20 million plastic materials to date. Leezen 's innovation of bio-bag recycling model is not only effective in preserving foods and reducing plastic, but also provides a practical reference for sustainable development.
