Entering the underground:CPC geothermal energy
CPC Corporation , Taiwan (CPC) has extensive drilling experience, starting from exploring geothermal energy in Datun Mountain in 1964, moving to Yilan in 1976, and from 1981 to 1995, they dispatched drilling teams to assist Japan in Kyushu's geothermal drilling. However, due to business strategy considerations, domestic geothermal drilling was suspended in June 1987. In recent years, in response to the government's green energy policy, CPC partnered with Taiwan Power Company in March 2018, planning geothermal exploration and power generation operations in areas like Renze and Tubang, ushering in a new era of geothermal energy exploration and power generation.
By 2020, CPC completed drilling 38 geothermal wells domestically, refining techniques and emphasizing stakeholder communication to strengthen community development. With local government support, CPC collaborated with the Mao'an tribe, explaining drilling plans, providing job opportunities, and aiming for future geothermal power plants to integrate with tribal culture and surrounding landscapes to boost local tourism and economy. Each meeting gained majority approval, fostering a win-win situation.
