Sustainable, Inclusive and Gender-Friendly Public Toilets
Public toilets found everywhere have been renovated in various innovative ways under New Taipei Government’s drive to promote SDGs. In December 2021, as Taiwan’s first "whole-area-rebuilt" case of public-private partnership, public toilets on B1 of the Citizen Plaza of New Taipei City Hall were renovated to be all-in-one all-gender/gender-neutral restrooms, under a total budget of NT$7.49 million. Also installed with Taiwan’s first smart vending machine of free diverse menstrual products. This innovative renovation was highly praised for its inclusive design to meet accessibility, all needs of all ages and all genders, and to be shared by all carers, jointly fulfilling SDG 11, SDG 3, SDG 5, and SDG 6.
"New Taipei City's Principles for the Installation of Gender-Neutral Public Restrooms" was released along with the design of Taiwan’s first government-approved "Gender-Neutral Restroom Certification Signs" on the World Toilet Day on 19th November in 2021. The nearly 6,000 public toilets administrated by New Taipei City Government can easily follow, which leads to an expected opportunity for New Taipei City to become a municipal of friendly public toilets citywide.
