Remote Children’s tutor class – one-on-one online learning and companionship
With the ideals of the founding spirit of Christianity, the emphasis on holistic education and the development of students’ educational, academic and service development, Tunghai University continues contributing generously to the society, and this "Digital Student Companion Project" is the best practice. This project started since 2008, and has been sustained for 14 years. The core value of this project consists of the motto: “Life accompanies younger life and life gives guidance to new life”. The project implements two main subjects - using Internet media to blend urban and rural spaces, and cultivate the spirit of self-management, social service, moral improvement and digital care for college students based on companionship and learning; introducing information tools through the Internet and online learning platforms and resources for teaching to construct a cooperative guidance mechanism among primary and secondary schools, digital opportunity centers and colleges and universities. The main goal of our project is to establish or to create a digital learning environment with multiple functions for students in remote areas and promote equal learning opportunities for those young students in rural areas.
This project combines the information services of the computer center and the education practice of the teacher training center of Tunghai University. It leads 2,100 college students from almost 34 departments in our university to tutor more than 1,000 rural students, who study in 16 primary and secondary schools and 2 digital opportunity centers in the remote areas of central Taiwan, by means of using information technology to integrate their learning, to enhance the macroscopic vision and to share life experiences of the students enrolled. We set this project into action and look forward to promoting two-way growth and improving the core literacy of these students. A network of companionship and learning has been woven between higher-educational and primary school partners, forming a model of mutual learning and goodness.
The management mechanism of online companionship and teaching-learning quality constructed in this project is reproducible and sustainable. We believe that our efforts will continue shortening the education gap between urban and rural areas. This promoted achievement has also been authenticated by the Ministry of Education to cultivate colleges’ talents, to enhance the social awareness and service momentum of future social elites, and work together to advance the social responsibility of the university.
